Beat the Heat: Tips for Sun-Safe Soccer Training

Summer is in full swing, but so is the heat! For any athlete, rising temperatures can have a major impact on your performance—and your health. Soccer players are especially at risk, as competitions take place outdoors with few breaks for rest and rehydration. Identifying the risk factors, prevention methods, and treatment options for heat illness will keep you safe and scoring this soccer season!

The What and How of Heat Illness

There are three types of heat-related illnesses: exercise-induced muscle cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Differentiating between the three is key to maintaining your safety on and off the field this summer.

Exercise-induced muscle cramps: Occur in high temperatures and are accompanied by thirst, fatigue, and excessive sweating. If you begin to cramp, take a break from play, rehydrate, and lightly stretch.

Heat exhaustion: Includes similar symptoms, as well as headache, dizziness, confusion, poor coordination, nausea, and vomiting. Move to a cool environment, rehydrate by taking small and frequent sips of cool water or an electrolyte drink to stabilize your body’s salt balance, and lie down with your legs elevated.

Heat stroke: The most dangerous form of heat-related illness, heat stroke requires immediate medical intervention. Generally defined by a body temperature of over 105 degrees Fahrenheit, individuals may also experience rapid heart rate and breathing, low blood pressure, collapse, confusion, seizures, and varied consciousness. If you suspect heat stroke, remove the individual from play immediately and cool with ice packs on the neck, armpits, and groin while contacting emergency medical services.

Are You at Risk Today?

With any sports medicine condition, prevention is the best medicine! Understanding the factors that put you at risk will keep you and your teammates safe on the field. Dehydration, sleep deprivation, and diuretics like coffee or energy drinks make you more susceptible to the heat. Get a good night’s sleep and drink plenty of fluids the night before and leading up to play to help your body stay cool. Try scheduling your training before or after the hottest time of day, but if warm conditions are unavoidable, wear light-colored sweat-wicking clothes to reflect heat and moisture. Incorporating breaks for fluid and recovery will help your body devote enough energy to cooling itself.

Don’t forget – there’s no shame in modifying your training session to stay safe in the heat! Reducing the length or intensity of your workout on a hot, humid day or postponing altogether can be the difference between a successful practice and a trip to the emergency room. And high temperatures don’t just put you at risk for heat illness. The fatigue and poor coordination you battle while working hard to stay cool can lead to trips or falls, and worse– a sprain or a break.

If you have questions about how to train safely during the hottest months of the year, contact Orthopedic ONE’s team of certified athletic trainers through our Sports Medicine Hotline. They can help you find ways to keep you moving safely and successfully this summer!

5 Essential Tips for Runners

While soccer players may not count themselves as runners, the average player runs up to 7 miles per 90-minute match, with midfielders coming in at just under 10 miles per game according to SportVUThat equates to lots of miles logged throughout the season!

With this in mind, these 5 Essential Tips will help you tackle these miles with ease!

  1. Warm-Up Before Running: Prioritize dynamic warm-up exercises before a run to increase blood flow to your muscles and reduce the risk of injuries. Examples include leg swings, high knees, and butt kicks.
  2. Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to any signs of discomfort or pain while running. Rest when needed, and don’t push through pain, as this could lead to more serious injuries. Here’s a list of 10 most common running injuries.
  3. Stay Hydrated and Fuel Properly: Drink water before, during, and after your runs to stay hydrated. Fuel your body with a balanced diet rich in carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats to support your training.
  4. Include Recovery Days: Regular rest days allow your body to repair and recover from the demands of running. Incorporate activities like foam rolling, stretching, or yoga to aid recovery.
  5. Listen to Expert Advice: Our specialists at Orthopedic ONE are here to support you on your running journey, no matter where you may be. Facing an injury, request an appointment. No referral required.
